From Darkness into Brightness: ASEAN Intellectual Property Association  General Meeting

The first ASEAN Intellectual Property Association was successfully held on the 5th of April at Sedona Hotel.

The two day annual general meeting was opened by Dr.  Zaw Min Aung, the Deputy Minister of Ministry of Science and Technology. Followed by an opening speech given , the Chairman of the Union of Myanmar Federation of the Chamber of Commerce and Trade and a brief address by Daw Tin Ohn Mar Tun , the new president of AIPA.

This year Myanmar was given the opportunity to chair as the president of AIPA. The two day meeting was attended by 157 participants, including 91 foreigners.

Daw Moe Moe Thwe, the Director of Ministry of Science and Technology gave an account of the current status of new IP laws in Myanmar.

After the coffee break a topic on the International Dimensions and Trademarks for ASEAN was addressed by Toe Su Aung, President of International Trademark Association.

Peter Fowler, United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), emphasized on the importance of protecting IP rights and its contribution to society economically and culturally.

Other dignitary speakers included Procter and Gamble, Law Professor DR. Khin Mar Yee, Mr. Koji Murai of Shinjyu Global IP, U Nyan Lin CEO of YKKO Goup of companies Ltd., and U Than Maung, Senior Legal Associate of Kelvin Chia Yangon Ltd.

The theme of the meeting was “From Darkness into Brightness” suitable with the current situation of Myanmar which has seen a significant chain of opportunities opening up under the present government.

The first day of the meeting was held at Sedona hotel with a welcoming reception and councilor meeting and the second day was at Inya Lake Hotel for the annual general meeting and a closing dinner, which was concluded with the song “Myanandar” and the sprinkling of water on the participants ushering the Buddhist New Year.
